The Audiobook Seminar

with Frank Muller

A comprehensive introduction

to the business and the art of audiobook narration,

direction, and production

Neumann U87

Consisting of two four-hour sessions on consecutive days at Frank Muller’s WaveDancer Studio in Los Angeles, the seminar begins with a brief overview of the multi-faceted structure of the audio publishing industry, then focuses on the process of creating an audiobook in the studio. A discussion of the acting and directorial skills necessary to a successful performance precedes an intensive recording session. All on-mike participants (limited to eight in number) work on provided texts to the end of the first session, and again in the second session. Other participants are encouraged to engage directorially.
Approaching narrative text, approaching characterization, performance within the context and with full utilization of the dynamics of the medium, as well as responsibility to the arc of the story and the author’s intent, are the central elements addressed. The seminar concludes with a discussion on finding employment: who to approach, who to avoid, how to make (and critique) demo tapes, agents and AFTRA, and industry reference guides and information in print and on the internet. A preparatory reading package is made available in advance of the seminar to enrolled participants. Industry reference information will be included in provided materials at the second session.

Frank Muller is the most sought-after narrator in the booming world of audiobooks. Dubbed "The King of Audiobooks" by The Wall Street Journal, the "Laurence Olivier of the medium" by the Chicago Tribune, the "Leonardo DiCaprio of literature’ by Entertainment Weekly, and ‘The first Valentino (of this new industry)" by Stephen King - who also said "When Frank reads the blind will see, the deaf will hear, and the lame will walk", Muller has narrated some 150 audiobooks.
