Mayor Dr. Andreas Bovenschulte

I am delighted to welcome you to the website of Bremen Town Hall.

Bremen Town Hall consists, in fact, of two adjacent buildings: Old Town Hall and New Town Hall. Construction of the old building dates back to the period 1405 to 1409, while the new building was erected between 1906 and 1913. Town Hall together with the statue of "Roland" in the Market Place was declared a World Cultural Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2004.

Let me invite you to a virtual tour of Town Hall. It will show you around the building and give you facts about its history and architecture. Here are some of the highlights:

  • The impressive Upper Hall, built in 1405, is one of the largest halls of that period.
  • The so-called Golden Chamber was designed in 1905 by painter Heinrich Vogeler in Art Nouveau style.
  • Senate Hall is where the Senators, the ministers of the government of Bremen, convene each Tuesday.

No matter where your virtual tour through Bremen Town Hall will lead you, each room has a story to tell.

However, Town Hall is not a museum. For more than 600 years now it has been the place where Bremen politics were shaped. The citizens of Bremen have always organized and allocated political power amongst themselves, no king or duke ever ruled over Bremen. Therefore we claim to be the oldest city republic in Europe. And what is more, Bremen acquired and kept an open minded cosmopolitan view of the world, combined with a liberal spirit and the willingness to take on responsibility.

I wish you a good time in Bremen Town Hall.

Sincerely,

Dr. Andreas Bovenschulte
Mayor and President of the Senate
