If you need a more functional and easy-to-use software than Microsoft WinPopup to send messages over the network, please consider our LanTalk LAN messenger or WinPopup-compatible LAN messenger LanTalk XP.

WinPopup is an old Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows Me network-related program that will allow you to send network messages from one computer to another in the same local network. You do not need to have Internet connectivity to use this software, because this program has no relationship whatsoever to the Internet. It is a program located in your Windows operation system. If your computers are already connected through LAN network and set up for a peer-to-peer network, then you can probably use this program.

Please look at the article Winpopup at Startup to learn how to create a shortcut for WinPopup and launch it with Windows at start-up.

If you have no WinPopup in the system, you can install it. WinPopup requires installation via the Control Panel (if you have installed LAN network, please skip step 1), Add / Remove Programs on the tab: Windows Setup.

Windows95, Windows 98 and Windows Me

run winpopup install

Step One : Windows 95

Winpopup is part of the Accessories group:

Step One : Windows 98 and Windows Me

Winpopup is part of the System Tools group:

windows 98 install

Step Two :

WinPopup is located in your Windows directory. If it does not start up automatically, use the RUN menu to start it:

run winpopup

For everyday use, create a shortcut to WinPopup in your StartUp folder. Click here to learn how to autostart WinPopup with Windows.

Using WinPopup :

When you receive a message, the program will automatically pop up and make a notification sound to let you know that a new message has come in. To answer the message, you should click on the envelope icon on the toolbar. The name of the user/computer that sent you the message will be set in the User or Computer box. Type your message in the edit box below the name below the Message:. Click on the OK button when you ready to send the message. To delete received messages, you should click on the wastebasket icon on the toolbar.

To send a new message, click on the envelope icon on the toolbar. Make sure that the User or Computer radio button is selected. Type in the name of the User or Computer. Type in your message in the edit box below. Then click OK to send it.

You can send a message to the whole workgroup of computers. Select the Workgroup radio button instead of User or Computer in this case. Type in the name of the group, and then type your message in the white box below and click OK to send. This message will be sent to everyone in the selected workgroup - be careful with this feature!

send message

If you do not know the target computer name or the target user name, your message will not be sent. You need to look in your Network Neighborhood folder for the names of the computers you wish to send messages to, or you can send the message to the whole workgroup and ask users to reply to you. WinPopup will check if the typed name is valid or not and that the defined user is currently logged on to the network or that the computer exists and then send the message.

If WinPopup is launched on the destination computer, the message will be displayed. If WinPopup is NOT launched, then the message will be lost (think about it like an announcement on a radio: if the radio is turned on and you are listening, you hear the message; if the radio is switched off, you miss the network message).

However: It does NOT guarantee that your message has been received on the destination computer or that WinPopup is launched on the destination computer.

If you need to be sure that the message is received or even read, please try LanTalk NET, our advanced WinPopup replacement.

For this screenshot, the destination name could not be found on the local network, and WinPopup would notify you about that.

WinPopup will store all received messages in the current session, and you can use the arrow buttons on the toolbar to navigate between them. You can also use the toolbar to start new messages and delete received messages.

Remember: When you close WinPopup, you will not receive any new messages!

You can use WinPopup Messenger to send messages to systems running Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows 2003. But you should be sure that recipient has some software to receive your message. It can be WinPopup Messenger, Messenger Service (in the NT-based systems Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows 2003) or our Lan messenger LanTalk NET.
