The newest member of the club, the final film in the Harry Potter franchise crossed the $1 billion mark on July 30, 2011 only two weeks after its release.
In the months and weeks leading up to Avatar’s release, many said there was no way Fox would come out ahead on the 3D tentpole. But never underestimate James Cameron. The film went onto gross a massive $2.02 billion at the international box office, and $760.5 million in North America. The movie, which revolutionized 3D filmmaking and remains the gold standard, supplanted Cameron’s Titanic as the biggest film of all time
Leonardo Dicaprio and Kate Winslet starred in the Academy Award-sweeping "Titanic," one of two James Cameron movies to make this list, which earned $1,835,300,000.
"The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" earned $1,129,219,252.
"Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" earned $1,060,332,628.

The Tim Burton-directed film was a sleeper hit, grossing $334.2 million in North America and $690.1 million at the international box office. The film teamed Burton with two of his go-two actors—Depp and Helena Bonham Carter, as well as Mia Wasikowska and Anne Hathaway.
The pic is a sizeable victory for Disney Studios chair Rich Ross and director Rob Marshall, as well as producer Jerry Bruckheimer (it also proves that Depp has lost none of his charm as Captain Jack Sparrow). On Stranger Tides—the first film in the franchise to be released in 3D—has done far better overseas, where it has grossed $774.7 million to date. Domestically, it’s grossed $234.5 million.
Christian Bale and Heath Ledger starred in "The Dark Knight," which earned $1,001,921,825.
